In P.E. class, K-6 students practiced jump roping. K-2 students enjoyed making an art museum of rope shapes and jumping over their ropes on the ground. All students learned both single rope (jumping holding the rope themselves) and jumping over a longer rope with two turns. Grades 3-6 tried both double dutch (two long ropes turned parallel to each other with two turners) and egg beater (two long ropes perpendicular to each other with four turners). We discussed how jump rope is good for our heart and lungs, builds aerobic capacity, and is a great activity that can be done almost anywhere. Do you have space at hone where your student can jump rope- perhaps even with an imaginary rope? In January, we will be learning basketball skills.
In health class, grades K-2 discussed different influences and healthy habits, like friends role modeling helmet wearing and family reminding them to get enough sleep. 3rd and 4th grade learned how to stand up to bully, teasing and harassment and considered who are trusted adults that they could turn to for help. 5th and 6th graders practiced assertive communication and reflected on the benefits of this style of communication compared with passive or aggressive styles. They role played how assertive communication might be used to say no to trying a cigarette or joining in on bullying.
