Many people are surprised to learn that my very first teaching job was in Texas. One of the most magical and memorable moments there was witnessing 5th grade students experience snowfall for the first time in their lives. Their faces, rosy from the cold, lit with excitment as they pranced around, hanging their tongues out to catch a flake.
"This ain't Texas*," and kids here in the Valley have seen many snowflakes, yet the wonder and excitement cultivated by their time outside in the snow is strong. My goal in doing winter sports in P.E. class is to grow this snow-day spark by helping students find a winter activity that gets them moving outside and hopefully can become a lifelong pursuit. I know many families do the same outside of school as well! I always enjoy hearing from students about their active weekend adventures.
I had a weekend adventure of my own in February, when I flew to Minneapolis to watch The Loppet Cup, the first FIS Cross-Country World Cup on US soil in twenty years. It was a thrill to watch Americans Gus Schumacher win the men's 10K and Jessie Diggins earn a place on the podium. Even more thrilling was the sheer enthusiasm of the crowd and being amidst 20,000 screaming fans who LOVE WINTER.
It was a delight to to embrace that LOVE of WINTER with (sometimes screaming) students at MES and WES. Please enjoy these photos (as well as two previous posts) of us playing, skiing, snowshoeing, and sledding.
Finally, THANK YOU to Friends of Moretown ECO who purchased snowshoes that were used by students at BOTH schools.
(*yes, I quoted a Beyonce song)
Be well and ski on,
Mrs. Zaino
