WES- Health Class March Update

In health class we've been working on the skill of decision making. Students learned about how to be safe around medicine and how to decide what to do if, for example, they saw a younger sibling playing with medicine or found something on the ground that could be medicine or candy- because they often look very similar.

Older students discussed how they should consider the consequences of different options when making a choice, and how they'd decide what to do in a scenario involving peer pressure to try drugs or make fun of a classmate.

We've delved into emergencies and illnesses- what adults can help, how and when to call 9-1-1, and what even is an emergency. We reviewed why it is so important to practice drills at school. I encourage you to discuss as a family where your meeting place would be if you needed to evacuate your home in case of a fire or other emergency. For my home, this is the compost pile, because there's a clear path to it even in the snow and it's a landmark away from the house. You might even have your student help draw a map showing the meeting place to post on your fridge.

Older students delved more into emergency preparedness and having first aid supplies, food and water on hand as well flashlights in case of a power outage. I encouraged them to ask an adult to help them check the batteries on the smoke detector and make sure that fire extinguishers are up to date.

The next skill we'll be focusing on is analyzing influences and we'll look at how influences can have either a positive or negative effect on our health.
