Upcoming Biking Days at WES and MES

Dear Families,

We've spent the first few weeks of PE class practicing routines and expectations and exploring safe equipment use (like scarves pictured above) and teamwork (playing capture the flag at the 3-6 grade levels). We're now gearing up to launch deeper into skills development.

One skill we'll hone during our biking unit is balance! Students will be biking on the following dates:

Thursday, September 25 - K-6 PE biking
Tuesday, September 30 - Family Bike Night 4:30-5:30pm before WES Open House
Wednesday, October 1 - K-6 PE biking
Thursday, October 2 - K-6 PE biking

WES Volunteers needed: Thursday, October 2nd 2:30pm to load the bike trailer

Moretown Elementary School

Friday, October 3 - K-6 PE biking
Monday, October 6- K-4 PE biking
Tuesday, October 7 - 5-6 PE biking
Thursday, October 9 - Family Bike Night 4-5pm before MES Open House
Tuesday, October 14 - K-6 PE/health class biking
Friday, October 17 - K-6 PE biking

MES Volunteers needed: Thursday, October 9th at 5pm and Friday, October 17th at 2:30pm to load the bike trailer

We have a fleet of bikes and extra helmets available for those who need them. If possible, please send your child’s bike to school since we have a limited number of bikes in each size.

  • Label bikes and helmets with the student’s name (masking tape works well).

  • Bikes should be in good working order — please check brakes and tire pressure ahead of time.

  • Waitsfield-
Bikes can be dropped off at the bike racks outside the gym/cafeteria. Helmets should be kept in your student's classroom.

  • Moretown-
Bikes can be dropped off along the fence on the rec field.

For students learning to ride:

  • Grades 1 and up:

    • Students who are still learning will use a balance bike.

    • Please leave training-wheel bikes at home, or remove training wheels and pedals to convert to a balance bike.

  • Kindergarten:

    • Students who aren’t pedaling on two wheels yet may bring bikes with training wheels or try a balance bike.

If you’d like your child’s bike to be locked, you need to provide the lock and your child will need to be able to operate it on their own. HUUSD is not responsible for lost or stolen bikes or helmets. Bikes may be picked up and dropped off each day (dates above) or left for the duration of the unit. Thanks for your help in getting us riding!!

Students should also bring weather appropriate clothing (our early morning P.E. students- WES 3/4 and MES 5/6- tend to have cooler weather and wet grass). Students in these classes may want to bring waterproof footwear or change of dry shoes for afterwards. Sneakers are great or rain/hiking boots are fine for the AM classes- please no crocs, sandals, dress shoes/dress boots/heels.

Pedal on,

Ms. Zaino
