January PE Updates

Welcome back! This first week in PE we’ve been easing back into routines, reflecting on last semester, and trying on ski boots and exploring skis and bindings as we get ready for cross-country ski days.

My goal is to get each class out skiing at least four times this winter. I’ll be watching the weather and snowpack closely—while especially cold temps might be fine for outdoor play, they’re not ideal for learning a new skill. Getting everyone fitted now means we can jump right in ski-first when conditions are just right. Be on the lookout for an email—we could start as soon as next week!

Cross-country skiing checks a lot of PE boxes: balance, coordination, endurance, and perseverance. It’s also a lifelong activity—and one of my favorite ways to move in the winter—so I love getting students out on skis whenever we can. Our indoor alternative this month will be Boom City, a fast paced and often requested game that emphasizes teamwork and catching and throwing skills.

A few quick notes:

  • My last day teaching health at Moretown will be Friday, January 16 (grades 1–4 will have health that day).

  • Health classes at Waitsfield will begin Wednesday, January 21.

Huge thanks to the Waitsfield PTA and Friends of Moretown ECO for helping fund new and replacement gear, and to GMVS students and staff for helping wax skis to keep them gliding! Thank you also to the New England Nordic Ski Association for providing us with the Nordic Rocks curriculum and additional equipment support.

Please enjoy the photos below from the pre-break “sleigh rides” students (and a few staff!)  enjoyed.
