As I sit typing this, the lost and found is piled behind me with some real gems. If you're missing a grey sweatshirt or gloriously plush fleece, chances are it's here. Check out these photos and swing by the stage in the gym (or send your child) if you recognize something.
Back to our originally scheduled program. In PE class this month, we've been working on basketball skills. In kindergarten, we've mostly used softer four square balls to practice bouncing and catching a ball, by yourself and with a partner. 1st and 2nd graders worked on dribbling, passing, and shooting hoops. We used a modified hoop- a hula hoop hanging from the basket so they could focus on proper form rather than having it up "granny" style. 3rd through 6th graders practiced defense and strategy and culminated with a half court scrimmage tournament.
At the end of January, health class will begin at WES for grades K-6. We'll meet for a 40 minute class once a week (though this may be modified a bit during ski weeks) to learn about the human body and ourselves. I'm wrapping up a semester of weekly health classes right now at Moretown School and I have been loving this new format of having health class weekly for a semester for more continuity of learning between classes. I look forward to launching into topics like mental health, substance and drug abuse prevention, and nutrition while we practice skills like goal setting and interpersonal communication.
If you're curious, you're welcome to check out some of my recent posts about health class at MES, as our topics will be similar. I'm particularly excited about sharing my approach to nutrition education. Even though this topic is a few months away in the WES curriculum, I invite you to check it out and consider diving into some of the resources I link to. I believe that nutrition education starts (and ends) at home and I'd love to partner with you in fostering a positive relationship with food in your household.
Speaking of food, I wish you all a splendid holiday season celebrating with all your favorite people and treats.
Be well and don't forget to check the lost and found,
Ms. Zaino
