XC Skiing PE

This snow and sunshine has been wonderful for outside PE classes! Grade 1-6 students (and K at Moretown, since they have already practiced with their class on Winter Sports days) have been working on taking their skis on and off independently and moving around on flat ground and small hills. Our more experienced skiers have enthusiastically supported their peers who are learning. Kindergartners at Waitsfield have had the chance to try some one-ski skiing and to do some snow play, including the popular tunnel crawl.

We've been skiing without poles for our first couple of classes and will use poles in subsequent classes. Cross country skiing without poles is beneficial because it forces skiers to rely solely on their leg movements and body balance, thereby enhancing their core mechanics and highlighting any imbalances in their form. It's a drill (as is one ski skiing) that is practiced by beginners and elites alike! Want to keep working on balance at home? Have a standing on one foot contest. Too easy? Do it with your eyes closed.
